Book Review: Shadow Hand by Anne Elisabeth Stengl

She will take your own two hands
to save your ancient, sorrowing lands.

By her father's wish, Lady Daylily is betrothed to the Prince of Southlands. Not the prince she loves, handsome and dispossessed Lionheart, but his cousin, the awkward and foolish Prince Foxbrush. Unable to bear the future she sees as her wedding day dawns, Daylily flees into the dangerous Wilderlands, her only desire to vanish from living memory.

But Foxbrush, determined to rescue his betrothed, pursues Daylily into a new world of magic and peril, a world where vicious Faerie beasts hold sway, a world invaded by a lethal fey parasite . . . .

A world that is hauntingly familiar.

Through My Window

Goldstone Wood is not for the ignorant nor the faint of heart.

If this is your first time entering Goldstone Wood...go and read the first five books of the series first! They will help prepare your mind for the most complex Tale of Goldstone Wood yet by far.

Anne Elisabeth Stengl again weaves a compelling tale of love, sacrifice, courage, despair, darkness, hope, and triumph. Readers will be boggled by the vast and bizarre array of the denizens of the Wood, but even more so, by the way Time is handled. Once again, the author astonishes...first by taking the cold, often cruel, Daylily and the unremarkable Foxbrush as her main characters. But they are not the only characters, oh no. This story might hold the largest cast yet, drawing in beloved figures from all the books and setting them to their own important role.

Mysteries left hanging will be answered. What happened to Lionheart after Moonblood? What is the Cren Cru, really? What happened to Sun Eagle after he vanished into the wood? Did Alistair ever find Mouse? Did the sylph ever get to grant Lionheart a wish? Why do Eanrin and Imraldera seem more distant 1500 years after Starflower than closer?

Oh yes, it gets exciting.

We have no lack of heroes or villains. The Cren Cru is a truly disturbing force. But the complications of each character and the depth they have is incredibly compelling.

It is a dark tale, possibly the darkest in the series yet. There were times when "one  didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy?" (-Samwise Gamgee) But do not fear, gentle reader! For a new dawn will come, and the sun will shine the brighter!

This is a story of revealment. Showing that even the most simple of people are much more complex than we could think. That who we see a person as is not necessarily who they are. That our true selves are most free in service To The One Who Names Us. That even the part of us we most fear can be transformed by our Prince into something beautiful.

For all fans of Goldstone Wood, here is a tale from Here and There that you cannot miss!!!

Shadow Hand is for sale at Amazon.com, so you can get it now before its official release date.

AAACH! The frustration of waiting for the Braille version!

What a wonderful review, Hannah. I was intrigued already and am even more so now. I'm especially eager to see how events from different time periods are woven together. And, Cren Cru seems like he? she? it? will be the most terrifying and disturbing antagonist of all. Mrs. Anne Elisabeth truly amazes me with her complexities. My mind cannot fathom her God-given talent. He definitely gave her a unique storytelling ability. I am simultaneously envious and awestruck. I think the awe is the most prevalent emotion, though.

God bless you.

I have started wandering from Anne Elisabeth's blog to yours for the past week. When I saw this post, I actually squealed! I'm looking forward to learning more about all the characters and their fates (Eanrin, Lionheart, Imraldera...) but for some reason I'm most excited about seeing Felix again. He reminds me so much of my little brothers, I can't help loving him with all my heart! This review has really whetted my excitement!

Are you allowed to tell us if Una or Rose Red appear at all? Please?

So glad to have you, Rae! I know you'll absolutely love the book!

The story contains many familiar characters, and several more who are not seen, but referenced. However...I do not think it is a spoiler so much as a preparation to tell you that Una is not mentioned (at least as I far I caught). :(

As for Rose Red...well, I don't think you'll be displeased with the distant influence she has on some of the characters. But I won't say more than that. ;)

Oh boy! Cren Cru REALLY caught my attention when I read Dragonwitch, and I've been hoping to find out what the heck it is.
This review was great and has me so far on the edge of my seat, that ... I'm about to fall off! Ack! *thump*. Ow ...

*snicker* I hope you've recovered from falling off your chair. :D

Cren Cru is a mind-blowing concept. I have read nothing like it, and have no idea how Anne Elisabeth came up with it.
