Book Review--Shadow Hawk

Please ignore Amazon's Look Inside tab.
This is the only decent cover I could find.

Shadow Hawk
by Andre Norton

Egypt has been under the fist of the Hysko Empire for generations. But now the rise of a Pharaoh in Thebes gives hope that the invaders might be overthrown.
Young Rahotep, captain of Desert Scouts and heir to a forgotten nome, answers his country's call to arms. But once he and his men arrive at the palace, the corrupted court targets them as scapegoats. Rahotep must use all his courage and determination to root out the evil within his own people before Egypt can hope to be free once again...

Little is known about the time period under which Egypt was conquered by the mysterious Hyskos. It was a desperate time "when a young man might dare great things". Indeed, Rahotep and the historical princes are all in their teens throughout this story. Shadow Hawk is a compelling story of honor, courage, and loyalty. The writing style is very unique and a bit over formal, but I quickly adjusted. The adventure and battle scenes are top notch. It really gives you a feel for close-quarters combat and infiltrating fortress strategy. Rahotep is a very inspiring young man, willing to give his country everything he's got. Besides Rahotep, my favorite character in this novel is...a kitten. Not any kitten. This is a kitten quickly growing up into a black war-leopard who's fiercely loyal to his master. Makes me want to have a bodyguard leopard...

Religious Content: As should be suspected from an novel set in Ancient Egypt, dialogue is drenched in references to the Egyptian gods. :) There are few priests, but I don't recall anything strange...besides an occurrence that is explained later.

Language: None. Besides the constant swearing by the gods.

Violence: This is a war book. Of course, there's some violence. But description is kept very low, the worst being a brief sight of a bloody sling-stone hole.

Sexual Content: There are few women in this story and certainly not a romantic plot. Sorry, girls. :) If there was any innuendo, it blew past me.

This is 1960 YA historical fiction. It's pretty safe in all areas.

I really enjoyed the story! I'll give it:
4 Stars

Note to Readers: This post has been pre-scheduled and I won't be back to answer any comments until at least the 23rd. Thank you!

Sounds like an interesting book.

I've wanted to have a kitten-leopard as a guardian for a character in my own story. XD
