Movie Recommendation: Squanto: A Warrior's Tale

Happy Thanksgiving week, everyone! May your hearts be filled with gladness and may your stomachs be stuffed with food!

I have a seasonal movie recommendation for you--a little known live-action Disney drama based off the true story of Squanto, a Native American who aided the Pilgrims during their first Thanksgiving.

Is the movie historically inaccurate?

Yes. Very.

Is it good anyway?

Yes. Very.

For one, the acting is fantastic. From our courageous young hero (who has been a model for a captive in many of my stories), to the pompous merchant who hunts him, to the varying monks. The whole setting is pretty great too. The music is lovely. I mean, it's a Disney! And barely anyone knows about it!

It's quite dramatic, but also humorous, drawing tears one moment and laughter the next.

Although the true story is changed rather significantly at parts to live up to Disney excitement, the heart of the tale remains the same. A man who, despite horrible mistreatment, rose past bitterness to save people he barely knew.

It is thrilling, heart-wrenching, sincere, and warm. So you should definitely check it out for the season!

Good suggestion, Hannah! It is strange how this movie is a Disney film and yet not very well-known. I've been wanting to watch it for a long time. I think I saw it when I was 7 or 8, but I don't remember a lot about it.

I've never heard of this movie, but it sounds amazing, even if it is historically inaccurate. Really anything made by Disney is amazing to me, though, because Disney holds a very special spot in my heart. I think a lot of the Disney live action movies do tend to be the lesser known ones. One other live action and lesser known Disney movie is Darby O Gill and the Little People. It's really good but no one knows about it!

This sounds like such an interesting movie. I'd never heard of it. Will definitely check it out. I love the Focus on the Family Radio Theater dramatization of Squanto's life. God truly used him to accomplish great work. Have a terrific Thanksgiving.

I didn't use to like it when I was little, Grace, (the bear terrified me) but I love it now!

Enjoy it, Ana!

Oh, you should definitely check it out, Meredith! I love the Focus on the Family version too! Tell me what you think if you watch it!

Wait, the Focus on the Family version as in an Adventures in Odyssey version of the story?!? If so, I need to listen to that episode right now; I love Adventures in Odyssey.

Focus on the family also does a radio presentation called Radio Theatre.

I've never heard of this movie, so thanks for the recommendation! Generally I'm frustrated by historically inaccurate films or books... but I love stories of people who rise above circumstances which should have left them bitter.

Oh, ok. I've never heard of Radio Theatre. Thanks.

To Ana: Focus on the Family Radio Theater is fantastic! They've dramatized all the Narnia books, many classics suchas Les Miserables, Oliver Twist, Anne of Green Gables and A Christmas Carol. They've also produced original programs, too. I've loved everything I've listened to by them. And, Adventures in Odyssey is terrific! I love their thanksgiving episodes, particularly the one where Mr. Whittaker reminisces about his relationship with his stepmother when he was a child. Happy Thanksgiving.

I totally agree with Miss Meredith about Focus on the Family's Radio Theater productions and Adventures in Odyssey. They are of the highest quality.

Jemma, Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrating the time when Pilgrims fled from England to America to escape religious persecution. After a tough time of survival, they dedicated a day of thanks to God, and we still observe it today. :D

Ok, well I hope you guys have a happy thanksgiving then!

My dad told me that me and him used to watch this movie all the time when I was little, but I don't remember it at all.
