Top Five Favorite Literary Couples
#1- Eanrin and Imraldera
The Tales of Goldstone Wood by Anne Elisabeth Stengl
They're perfect for each other! They make a wonderful team. They are completely willing to sacrifice themselves for the other's sake. And yet...1,600 years since Eanrin admitted his love for her they've gotten farther apart! How? What happened in that oh-so-mysterious time gap? Congratulations, Anne Elisabeth, for creating such an enigmatic love story.
#2- Eugenides and Irene
The Queen's Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner
I admit, had I not read the book reviews I would never have seen this romance coming. Even fully aware of its inevitability I was still taken completely by surprise--which is how Eugenides likes to do things, I notice. What I really enjoy about this is that the main hunk of their love story happens after they get married. And it truly is a beautiful example of commitment against overwhelming odds.
#3- Corlath and Harry
The Blue Sword by Robin Mckinley
He's a king of the desert, she's a pale foreigner. They have nothing in common...right? Um, no. In fact, they both share the same deadly gift of power. Which would make them rivals, right? Once again, no. I really loved seeing love blossom between them, especially since I was afraid it would never happen.
#4- Athelbald and Una
The Tales of Goldstone Wood by Anne Elisabeth Stengl
A beautiful allegorical love story in which the Prince of Farthestshore loves and saves Una despite her shunning and rejection of him.
#5- Mirasol and the Master
Chalice by Robin Mckinley
Okay, I love Mrs. Mckinley's love stories. Mirasol and the Master are so sweet in their uncertainty, and there is a definite theme of Beauty and the Beast going on here, since the Master looks like some wraith out of your worst nightmare...yet he's such a gentleman.
Once again, I find myself unable to organize the rest into positions to make a list of ten, so I'll just name off my other favorites--Oeric and Beana, Lionheart and Rose Red from The Tales of Goldstone Wood, Elam and Sapphira from the Oracles of Fire, Charles Darney and Lucie from A Tale of Two Cities, George and Eliza from Uncle Tom's Cabin, Cimorene and Mendanbar from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Taran and Eilonwy from The Chronicles of Prydain.
What about you? What are some of your favorites?

Eanrin and Imraldera definitely make it on my top favorite couples. I wonder if they'll finally get together in "Shadow Hand?" That would be awesome! :-D
Never heard of "The Blue Sword" by Robin Mckinley, but the couple makes it sounds interesting.

You haven't read 'The Blue Sword'??? I definitely recommend it! It's a bit slow at first, but it turns into an awesome story. It's my favorite of Robin McKinley's novels, with 'Chalice' coming in second.
I have a review on 'The Blue Sword' back at the beginning of March if you want to learn more.
Thanks, I'll check it out.
First, I want to say that Eanrin really never admits his love for Imraldera to anyone other than himself... does he? Do you know something I don't?
My favorite couples are...
1) Eanrin and Imraldera
2)Emma and Mr. Knightly - "Emma" by Jane Austen
3)Katniss and Peeta - "The Hunger Games" trilogy, by Suzanne Collins (okay, how obsessed am I?)
4) Una and Athelbald.
Plus, I like Charles and Lucie, like you said.
Yeah, Eanrin didn't officially admit it. But he was singing it at the end, and 'possible Imraldera overheard.
Great List!
I never thought of that.
what a fun post!!
1. Definitely Eanrin and Imraldera!
2. Lizzy and Mr. Darcy (from Pride and Prejudice)
3. Katniss and Peeta (I spy another Hunger Games fan...and I'm feeling proud I decided to wear my Mockingjay pin today when I saw that)
4. Aragorn and Arwen
Would it be weird to say the Bard and the Princess from my sister's self-published book? Because I really adore those two as well.
:)
Hannah, you've got so many of my favourites on your list!! Especially Imraldera and Eanrin and Gen and Irene. Two of the most lovely romances ever written.
Others I love are Ani and Geric, Finn and Enna, and Razo and Dasha from Shannon Hale's "The Books of Bayern", a wonderful fairytale-fantasy series I think you'd absolutely LOVE, Hannah! As well, Caspian and Ramandu's Daughter from "The Chronicles of Narnia". They get one page between them, but as a writer I love to imagine their love-story. C.S. Lewis says so much in so few words.
Oh, and of course, all the LOTR peeps--Faramir and Eowyn for the world. I wish Tolkien had given them their own series and shown us their adventures together.
Great List! And of course you can name the Bard and the Princess from your sister's book! They're great characters!
I read 'The Books of Bayern'! The first three didn't quite enchant me, but book 4, 'Forest Born', really went to my heart. I was rooting for all the characters in there more then in their own individual books! I really enjoyed it!
When a writer is a reader we have the lovely privilege of imagining the words between the lines in other books!
And Faramir and Eowyn were meant for each other! Plus, I was always curious to know more about Eomer and his bride, Lorthiriel. Did you know she was a Dunadan, like Aragorn? She was also the daughter of Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth!
Oo! Oo! I just thought of another Tolkien couple I absolutely adore. Tuor and Idril! Great story! One of the few in 'The Simarillion' that ends well. For them personally anyway. Their child was Earendil. You know...the star... :)
My personal favourite in "The Books of Bayern" is probably "The Goose Girl"--I'm a lot like Ani, and I first read it at a time in my life when I was painfully shy and struggling with bullying (I think I was 11), so they definitely have another level of meaning for me. But "Forest Born" was really lovely; it felt different than her others in the series, but in a good way. Have you read any other books by her?
And no, I didn't know that about Lorthiriel--to be honest, I'm still working on finishing the entire LOTR--I'm on book three, but I've been so busy! But I read about 1/4 of "The Simarillion" and it's so beautifully written--Tolkien is a mythic master! I don't know if I reached the story of Tuor and Idril yet, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for them when I read the rest of it! :)
Oh, that's so wonderful you were able to relate to Ani. I was able to relate to Rin (not completely, understand :P), but still I understood her a lot.
I've read Princess Academy, which was nice, and I also read 'Book of A Thousand Days', which I wasn't particularly huge on.
Enjoy the works of Tolkien!
Sorry to crash the party late, but this is just such a great thread.
1. Imraldera and Eanrin, duh. (I won a copy of Dragonwitch, but it's in the mail and hasn't come yet. I thought reading the Amazon sample pages would help, but now I want to know more!
Tied for 1. Nynaeve and Lan, from Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" series. Sometimes Jordan takes FOREVER getting to them, but it's worth it.
Also tied for 1. Lirael and Nick, from Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy.
4: Seraphina and Kiggs, from "Seraphina," by Rachel Hartman
And last but certainly not least, 5. Puck and Sean from Maggie Stiefvater's "The Scorpio Races" :)
